Be sure you know which type of website you are joining in order to avoid any misunderstandings. Compare the type of websites you are interested in against each other to be able to find out the difference in costs and other little details. Does the website offer a chat service or would you have to give our own chat information? Does the website offer rules and regulations that protect you from harassment and abusive users? These are the small details that can make a huge difference.

No online dating guide would be complete without a mention of the dos and don'ts of setting up your online dating user profile. First, avoid using your real name. You want to maintain that element of safety until you choose to let someone in. Posting photos of yourself is not required, although you will probably get more hits that way. Keeping that element of safety in mind, posting sexually suggestive or partially clad photos of yourself is not recommended. Use some nice, run of the mill photographs that provide small “snapshots” into your life and your personality. Do not include photographs that include images of other people as everyone has a right to privacy when it comes to posting their picture(s) on the Internet.

We certainly can’t say that it won’t happen, but your chances of finding someone in this passive way is incredibly slim. The more you put yourself out there to chat and email other members of the site, the more you will start making connections.
It’s not hard to just say a quick hello to someone that catches your interest. Short and sweet does the trick, rather then long winded explanations regarding why you are single, how ready you are to jump into a new relationship, and how you’re holding your breath until they respond; just give them a brief greeting that somehow shows that you’re interested. Many online dating advice tips include pre-typed messages so that you can send a simple hello and see what type of response you get. Something along the lines of "I saw your profile and just wanted to say hi.", "I thought it was really interesting that you listed training dogs for the blind as one of your hobbies." or "I’d love to hear more about that if you get the chance. Hope to hear from you."
Keeping safety in mind, do not add in your phone number, your address, your personal email or chat information, or any other way to identify or contact you before you are ready. When you are ready to meet someone, do so in a public place and make sure that someone knows where you are going, not just the first time, but every time until you are sure your safety is not threatened.
